Straddle Base Hip Capsule CARs
2m 17s
This video covers Straddle Base Hip Capsule CARs - a straight-leg rotational priming drill that prepares the hip joint and capsule for deeper work, especially PAILs/RAILs and other high-tension isometrics. The purpose is to take the hip through slow, controlled internal/external rotation so the joint is “online” before you start pushing hard. Priming rotation matters because it improves awareness, reveals your true workspace for the day, reduces stiffness and guarding, and makes isometric effort more targeted instead of turning into full-body compensation.
In this variation the priority is straight legs (no knee bend) and pure hip capsule rotation. That straight-leg constraint makes the drill more honest - and it also makes it easier to spot cheats. The main focus is limiting compensation from the pelvis and spine while keeping the movement smooth and controlled.
Compensation cues to watch for:
• Sit bones shifting/lifting: if they slide, roll, or one pops up, you’re borrowing range
• Pelvis rolling or rotating: if the pelvis follows the movement, slow down and reduce range
• Knee bend or foot “helping”: if the knee softens, you’re escaping the constraint
Keep the torso quiet, keep the legs long, and let the hip do the rotation.
Done well, Straddle Base Hip Capsule CARs are a great “diagnostic” and a perfect lead-in before any hip IR/ER isometric work.
