The goal is simple but revealing — attempt to lift the ankle off the floor, driving the hip into further internal rotation. No shifting, no rocking, no compensating through the pelvis or spine. A controlled lean is permitted and encouraged if needed to unload the position slightly and allow some lift to occur — this is not cheating, it is smart loading. The lean should be intentional and minimal, used only to find the threshold where lift becomes possible.
Lifting the ankle in this position directly recruits the hip's internal rotators, demanding that they generate active force at the very end of their available range — exactly where most people have little to no muscular control.
